February – the month of Love <3
Posted by Karen Hollaman | Feb 29, 2012

This month I re-introduced something I haven’t done in a couple years – learning – more specifically, a seminar series on Childhood Developmental Disorders. Learning is probably one of my favorite things. And learning about children and health in one program – it doesn’t really get any better than that for me! Needless to say, I had high expectations for my first seminar, not quite knowing what I was getting into. As it turns out, it was probably one of the most informative and interesting 3 days of learning I have encountered.

Winter is always one of my favorite seasons; crisp air, cold temperatures and an opportunity to share a fire with loved ones on a consistent basis. This winter has brought exciting changes for Red Tail Wellness, including the need for a larger office! We are currently building out a 1014 sq ft office in North Boulder at 4520 N. Broadway, C-4C with the help of Bruce Hensen building services. It was an amazing process working with our realtor, Wade Arnold of the Colorado Group and we are blessed to have worked with these professionals.

Did you ever have a hero? Did you grow up watching Hogan’s heroes or Mash? How about great war movies from John Wayne or even the more gritty movies like Platoon or Full Metal Jacket? I had a hero growing up, my grandfather.

Autoimmunity & Leaky Gut: The Final Autoimmune Frontier
Modern research, including the work of Alessio Fassano, the world’s preeminent researcher in Celiac disease is confirming what has been the suspected cause of autoimmunity – the Gastrointestinal Tract. Gastrointestinal problems can shatter the fine balance of the gut barrier and begin the process of “leakage” of undigested antigenic materials (foods, bacteria, etc) into the sub-mucosa and then bloodstream. The immune system’s job is to identify, tag, then eliminate invaders whether they are infectious or large protein molecules from undigested foods. This process of materials seeping into the circulation challenges the immune system and activates pro-inflammatory cytokines (immune system bullets) and our antibody system, which further exacerbates the intestinal barrier permeability (“leaky gut” syndrome).

Hypothyroid DVD's Available!
Have you ever wanted to educate yourself or your loved ones on this condition? Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism affects 15% of the United States population yet it is only treated as a simple replacement hormone issue. The real culprit is the immune system and the various triggers that cause it to attack the thyroid gland. This is the first time we have released the 73 minute video focused on educating the general public on the research and tools you can use to start healing yourself. If you are interested and want a sneak peak, please check out part 1.
Hashimoto’s Hypothyroid DVD $10 now, $20 after end of August!
Tummy Troubles & Hypothyroidism
Have you ever felt like your tummy was a bit off? This is of course an understatement for those suffering from an autoimmune thyroid condition. This blog post will touch on why autoimmune thyroid (remember, 90% of thyroid disease has an autoimmune mechanism according to the American Endocrine Society!) affects the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and why it’s important to screen for autoimmunity beyond Hashimoto’s if you suffer from a thyroid condition.
Men's Health Month

Men & Women's Health Lecture On Aging Gracefully June 14th - Is It Low T?
Look To Your Feet, It Could Be the Source of Your Problems!
Parmaceutical companies have recently been advertising drugs for the treatment of “Low T”, or low testosterone levels in men. They are attractive commercials touting increased vitality, virility and vigor through the latest pharmaceutical testosterone cream or potion. The commercials describe a slew of symptoms and how perfectly everything rebalances with the remedy. Savvy health consumers will be suspicious as male menopause, i.e., andropause, may possibly be more complex than female menopause!
According to the American Journal of Therapeutics in an article titled “Management of the Cardinal Features of Andropause”, “Unlike the dramatic changes in the hormonal milieu occurring during menopause in women, theage-related changes in reproductive hormones of men are subtle and occur gradually throughout the years of mature life”. So it may be difficult for men to realize that their hormonal symphony has shifted and that they are now at an increased risk to serious diseases.
Andropause can significantly effect men’s health. Five of the 10 most common causes of death in males are directly related to the loss of male hormones. Testosterone levels directly impact cardiovascular health, blood sugar control, and neuro-degeneration as seen in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, suicide due to depression, and Alzheimer’s disease. Knowing the dire implications, we ask: Is testosterone replacement therapy the answer? Unfortunately, the answer is not so simple. Testosterone, like other hormones, is controlled by a hierarchy of varioushormones and glands that must be synchronized properly.

If you’ve heard me lecture or talk on Celiac Disease, then you already know it may not be Celiac disease! Unfortunately, Gluten Sensitivity is often the culprit in many diseases and it can actually be worse than Celiac Disease! You may already be aware that you have Celiac Disease or Gluten Sensitivity. Dr. Ian’s Info
Hypothyroidism and Your Immune System:
You hear more and more these days about people having a ‘thyroid condition’. The disease is on the rise and because the thyroid is a very sensitive gland it is commonly the first sign of the development of an autoimmune disease. Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism is the most common autoimmune condition in the United States. One study found 7-8% of the U.S. population has antibodies against their thyroid tissue! Additionally, Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease accounts for over 90% of the hypothyroid cases in the U.S. Unfortunately these people (most commonly women) progressively lose their thyroid tissue, and eventually through years of destruction, symptoms develop. Symptoms range from loss of energy, cold hands and feet and mental function to poor bowl function and mood. Patients typically have periods of normal function with bouts of abnormal, even scary symptoms. Palpitations, anxiety and heart fluttering are not uncommon and are further symptoms warranting examination into an autoimmune mechanism.
The Hottest Hormone in Medicine: Vitamin D - Is Your Family Getting Enough?
Posted by Ian Hollaman | Jan 03, 2011
Vitamin D is a hot topic these days, and for good reason. While it’s importance for bone health has long been known, current research is finding that sub-optimal vitamin D is implicated in many disease states, especially for pregnant women, their unborn children and their nursing infants. That begs the question of what is a healthy amount of vitamin D and is it the same for everyone?
Awakening Consciousness Through Healthy Brain Function

Have you ever gone through your day feeling like you were in a fog? Or you ate something and then felt like you were dragging through the day? According to Dr. Datis Kharrazian, everything you have ever experienced, felt, or conducted in your life is due to brain function. The ability to enjoy, perceive, sense, and experience life is dictated by the firing of your brain.
Hypothyroidism: Treating Fire with Fire???
Posted by Ian Hollaman | Jul 14, 2010
Hypothyroidism affects approximately 34 million people (11%) in the United States, a majority of those being female. Unfortunately, many people and practitioners don’t recognize hypothyroidism as an autoimmune disease, even though 90% of hypothyroid cases are autoimmune! —– The presence of thyroid antibodies in blood work is conclusive for the autoimmune disease, known as Hashimoto’s. These antibodies gradually and continually destroy the thyroid gland, eventually resulting in thyroid failure. Patients are typically offered thyroid hormone replacement therapy or, alternatively, iodine and glandular supportbut these treatments actually add fuel to the fire!
Gluten Intolerance: Solely a Gut Issue, Right?
Posted by Ian Hollaman | Apr 04, 2010
Wrong! Remember, in the movie Titanic, the panoramic ocean scenes with icebergs dotting the horizon? And the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio, leaning overboard, notices an iceberg suspiciously close on the ship’s starboard side? What happened to the Titanic is what closely resembles our current health-care approach and attitudes toward gluten intolerance and celiac disease. What seems small and insignificant on the surface is actually gigantic and life-altering.
